Brown rice in an Aroma cooker, anyone use the dedicated button?

Saw a few peoples asking about the brown rice settings on their Aroma cookers, so I figured I'd toss something out there for people to discuss. According to the forums, people should cook brown rice at a 2:1 ratio of water to rice (1 cup rice to 2 cups water), rinsed, and then cooked on the brown rice button for around 50 minutes (takes longer than white rice to cook because of the outer bran layers). It seems like they put a button for brown rice specifically because brown rice requires more time to cook than white rice does. Most peoples just stick to the 2:1 ratio, but does anyone play with the ratio of water to rice when cooking brown rice? Also, does the brown rice button on these appliances do something different to the rice than the white rice button? For example, does it have a longer soak cycle or is it just a longer timer for the rice to cook?

The standard 2:1 ratio works best for most type of short grain brown rice. For long grain brown rice, though, I often use a 2.25:1 ratio. Otherwise the bottom layer always end up a little crunchy. Also, make sure to rinse the rice well beforehand. Otherwise the rice can end up gumsming up in the pot.

does the soak before cooking actually do anything? ive seen recipes say soak 30 min first and others say just dump it in. Whats the difference in the final texture

lol nobody is cracking open an aroma to reverse engineer the firmware. Its a 30 dollar rice cooker

I found this teardown blog a few years back where someone actually did dissection of an Aroma rice cooker to reveal exactly what goes on in the firmware. The brown rice cycle on the cheaper Aroma rice cookers is just a longer timer for the rice to cook using the same thermistor logic as the white rice cycle. More expensive rice cookers that use fuzzy logic programming (Zojirushi, Tiger) do have a soak cycle for the rice grain for around 110F before the rice begins to boil. Thus, if you have the cheaper Aroma rice cooker, you are essentially paying for a rice cooker with a button that cook brown rice for longer than white rice (it does not perform any different functions), so you can save money on the rice cooker and just use the rice cooker to prepare brown rice. However, if you really want good results with brown rice on your Aroma rice cooker, soak the brown rice grains in warm water for 30 minutes prior to cook.
